Word of the Day: Pique

Today’s word of the day is pique. This looks similar to Friday’s word of the day, piquant. The word pique can be used both as a noun and as a verb. When used as a verb, it refers to resentment arising from hurt pride. When used as a verb, it can have two meanings. First, it can mean to stimulate interest. The second meaning is to feel hurt or resentful (be piqued).

Use it in a sentence!

The short portion of the lecture she heard really piqued her interest.

The girl was piqued because her boyfriend broke her heart.

But where did it come from?

The word pique, like the word piquant, comes from the French word piquer, which means to prick or irritate.
