Have you ever wondered about what might have happened on this day in history? I sure do! Today, I want to take a quick glance in the past and find out what happened on June 1st.
On June 1st, 1495, the first written record of Scotch Whiskey – distilled by Friar John Cor – appeared in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland. The Exchequer Rolls of Scotland are records of the Scottish Exchequer and they date from 1326 to 1708.
England’s 15th poet laureate John Masefield was born on June 1st, 1878. He was the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until 1967. His best-known works are children’s novels called, “The Midnight Folk” and “The Box of Delights”, and the poems, “The Everlasting Mercy” and “Sea-Fever”.
On June 1st, 1944, The British Broadcasting Corporation aired a line of poetry by French Poet Paul Verlaine. It was actually a coded message to warn the French resistance that the D-Day invasion was imminent. It was called "Chanson d'automne" ("Autumn Song").
Have you ever heard the name Helen Keller? In case you haven't, she was an author and lecturer who, although she was both blind and deaf for most of her life, still managed to attain a college degree. Hellen Keller died on June 1st, 1968.
