Word of the Day: Assignation

Today’s word of the day is assignation. If you’re like me, you love a good historical romance novel, so you’d be accustomed to seeing this word. For those that aren’t familiar with it, the word assignation is a noun. An assignation is a secret meeting, especially between lovers. Lovers might plan an assignation when they plan to absquatulate. Obviously, they would need to be furtive about their assignation.

Use it in a sentence!

Charles had an assignation with Kristina and asked her to run away with him.

But where did it come from?

The word assignation originated in late middle English. It was used in the sense of command, appointment to office, or allotment of revenue. It also has old French roots from the Latin word “assignatio”, and from the verb “assignare”.
