Word of the Day: Gardyloo

Todays word of the day is gardyloo! Gardyloo is an interjection. It was used to warn people who were passing by of waste that was about to be thrown from a window to the street below. Obviously, this wouldn't be done furtively.

Use it in a sentence!

The word gardyloo is basically obsolete now. However, if you wanted to use it in a sentence you would say, "Gardyloo!".

It's basically the equivalent of saying, "Watch out!" nowadays.

But where did it come from?

Gardyloo was used in medieval Scotland. It was still being used down to the 1930's and 1940's when people didn't have indoor toilets.
