Word of the Day: Phonophobia

Today’s word of the day is phonophobia. Phonophobia is a noun. It basically means having an intolerance of or hypersensitivity to sound. A more dated definition is that it is a fear of sounds, especially loud, sudden ones. (I may secretly suffer from phonophobia!)

It can also be a fear of hearing one’s own voice or speaking aloud.Have you ever been in class or in any kind of public setting and someone calls on you to speak, and you get that instant stage fright? Could that be phonophobia? Or maybe, that’s just being an introvert. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Use it in a sentence!

When she has a migraine, she develops phonophobia.

But where did it come from?

The first known use of the word phonophobia was in 1853. It was developed from the Greek words for hearing (phono) and fear (phobia).
