Today’s word of the day is snotter. The word snotter can be used as either a noun or a verb. As a noun, snotter refers to a piece or drop of nasal mucus. Hopefully, when a sialoquent person speaks, it’s only saliva coming out when they spit and not also nasal mucus!
As a verb, snotter means to breathe through obstructed nostrils or to snivel or blubber.

However, this word also has a technical meaning. Nautically speaking, a snotter is a fitting which holds the heel of a sprit close to the mast. It has a length of rope with an eye spliced in each end.

But where did it come from?
The word snotter seems to have Scottish roots but it’s exact origin is currently unknown. The only known fact is that it originated some time in the mid-18th century.
