Today's word of the day is widdershins. Widdershins is an adverb. Simply, it means counterclockwise. The long meaning is: in a direction contrary to the sun's course. It is considered to be unlucky.
Use it in a sentence!
He ran widdershins around his girlfriend.
But where did it come from?
The word widdershins originated in the early 16th century. It has roots in the middle low German word, "wedderssins", and from the middle high German word, "widersinnes". It was taken from the words "wider" (against) and "sin" (direction). The word "sin" was also associated with the Scottish word for sun.
